NIGHTMARE ALLEY
written by Jonathan Brielle is based on the 1946 “lurid bestseller” by
William Lindsay Gresham. In 1947 it became an iconic movie – a sordid
tale of a conniving young man who, in the words of a supporting
character – “ends up low because he aimed so high”. In the tawdry
world of illegal side shows like “The Geek” – a man who has sunk so low
that his job is to bite the head off of Chickens. Stan steals hearts,
minds and money and meets an astonishing end.
Author/Composer Jon Brielle spent years working closely with the late Mrs. Gresham as well as Geffen Artistic Director, Gil Cates, to develop the musical beyond its original carny story into a tale of fate versus free will. Utilizing Gresham’s device of a Tarot Card heading each chapter, the musical now further explores our choices and restores some of the original plot points not developed for the Geffen Production in this new Concert Production
Jeremiah James will play Stanton Carlisle, the conniving carny mentalist turned clairvoyant preacher for 12 performances kicking off the new Lunchtime Musical Series at The Player’s Theatre in New York, March 29th through April 10th. James (Billy Bigelow- Carousel London Revival) will appear with James DePaiva (Max Holden, One Life To Live) as Clem Hoatley along with Dominique Plaisant (The Wild Party; The Vampire Lestat) and newcomer Ashley Kate Adams as the innocent electrocution girl seduced in this dark tale.
