| Review: Stop The Ferry I Want To Get Off. by David G. |
| If this is what Fire Island is like, If this is what being gay is like... Please leave me home and lock me in the closet. Forever!!!!!! Could the characters in this show be any more superficial? They just seem to be off to their next cocktail and trick. Is this really the show our subculture needs right now? What probably started out as a celebration of gay life in the authors mind, had turned into a nightmare of gay life. The characters aren't developed and they differentiate themselves with one being more effeminate than the next. Lisping lines like "I've already slept with you last night. Now I want to meet him." The first act plods along explaining the Pines, the Grove, the train to Fire Island, the taxi to the Ferry, the Pantry, , the meat rack, grindr, cruising, the ferry, and then one hour later we finally get to a plot. The first act is one hour and forty minutes long--Stop the Ferry I want to get off. Doesn't the author know that the inciting incident has to be early in the play to hold the audiences attention? (Hint-inciting incident usually on page 23-not 123-23) He needs to go back to play structure 101. So one hour later, we have a plot: Gay guy #1 is lovers with gay guy #2. He seems perfectly happy as the lover offers him shelter, puts him through graduate school, gets him a job, and focuses him. Ok, the lover is controlling and slightly abusive but nobody's perfect right? Come along, this blast from the past, a free spirited d.j. gay guy number 3. In a chance meeting they meet again... the DJ decides he made a mistake and guy 1 is the love of his life..............and suddenly--oh my god "Who do I stay with.?" Frankly my queer, I don't give a damn. We know nothing about the characters. They aren't developed. There is some really nice choreography and some great dancers to boot. And there are some nice sets, fun costumes, and production values. And some fun cartoon videography. And there may be a musical in there somewhere but the characters need development, the book needs editing. It needs to decide if its a travelogue or a love triangle. It really shouldn't be both. And the boys on stage really don't have to be that nelly.. do they? They are nelly enough without being directed that way. Right now this show is a well produced mess. There may be a cute song in their someone but its hard to find in this chaos. The author, an attorney, produced it himself. I hope his law practice is a success and has a secretary to keep his mind organized. Stop the ferry. Go back to play structure 101. Find a director to help hone your vision. |
