SEBASTIAN BARRY'S WHITE WOMAN STREET OPENS AT IRISH REP
Published 2010-05-16
Sebastian
Barry's White Woman Street, about Irish outlaws in 1916 Ohio, opens
May 16th at Off-Broadway's Irish Repertory Theatre. The company also
features Greg Mullavey (“Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman"), Ron Crawford,
Charlie Hudson III, Stephen Payne, Gordon Stanley and Evan Zes. Performances are
through June 27th. Irish Rep artistic director Charlotte Moore
directs.
White
Woman Street "tells
of five outlaws led by Irish expatriate, Trooper O'Hara, who converge on the
town of White Woman Street," according to Irish Rep. "Haunted by dark
memories of a long ago visit, O'Hara leads his rag-tag gang into the town — and
into the brothel, wherein he must face his demons. Against a poetic narrative
of Irish and American history, Sebastian Barry weaves a searing tale that
evokes a time of change and personal displacement. Stories are told, songs are
sung, wild boars are shot and eaten, and a train filled with gold is
approaching fast."
The
creative team includes scenic designer Hugh Landwehr, costume designer David
Toser, lighting designer Clifton Taylor and sound designer Zach Williamson.
Irish
playwright, novelist and poet Barry penned the award-winning The
Steward of Christendom and Our Lady of Sligo. His
latest novel, "The Secret Scripture," was short-listed for the 2008
Man Booker Prize for Fiction.
The
Irish Rep is at 132 West 22nd Street, between 6th and 7th
Avenues. For tickets and information, call (212) 727-2737 or visit
