59E59 Theaters (Elysabeth Kleinhans, Artistic Director; Peter Tear, Executive Producer) is thrilled to celebrate Artie Shaw's Centennial at AMERICAS OFF BROADWAY when The Anderson Twins take over Theater A for two jazz-filled weeks of Mr. Shaw's Signature Sounds. The celebration kicks off with THE ANDERSON TWINS - Benny Goodman MEETS ARTIE SHAW: WHO WAS KING? from Tuesday, May 18 - Sunday, May 23, followed by THE ANDERSON TWINS CELEBRATE ARTIE SHAW AT 100 WITH Daryl Sherman from Tuesday, May 25 - Sunday, May 30.
The performances on Tuesday, May 18 and Tuesday, May 25 are special Member Nights for 59E59 Theaters' Members. Member tickets to those two performances are $22, and include two drinks at 59E59's E:Bar on the mezzanine.
Twenty-three year old jazz wunderkinds The Anderson Twins take center stage at 59E59 Theaters with their six-piece band for a Centennial celebration of legendary jazz giant Artie Shaw.
Artie Shaw once famously said, "Benny Goodman played clarinet. I played music." Kicking off the first of a two-week engagement, The Anderson Twins explore this legendary rivalry between two of the jazz world's most prominent artists. The talented Twins turn the art of clarinet into an adrenalin filled duel with THE ANDERSON TWINS - Benny Goodman MEETS ARTIE SHAW: WHO WAS KING?
For the second week, the Twins are joined by the irrepressible Daryl Sherman to celebrate Shaw in signature style. Ms. Sherman, a natural choice for this centennial celebration, was handpicked by Artie Shaw to be his vocalist when he re-formed his band in 1983 after a 25-year retirement. THE ANDERSON TWINS CELEBRATE ARTIE SHAW AT 100 WITH Daryl Sherman is a loving tribute to the most innovative and respected musician of the jazz and Big Band era.
Regular fixtures at Dizzy's Club Coca Cola at Jazz at Lincoln Center, the 23 year-old Anderson Twins are featured every Thursday night at 59E59's E:Bar. The identical twin brothers, Peter and Will, were members of the internationally selected Clifford Brown/Stan Getz Fellows, Jazz Aspen Summer Sessions, Dave Brubeck Summer Colony, Scholarship winners at the Fish-Middleton Jazz Competition, and they were Downbeat Magazine outstanding soloists while they were still in high school.
They began studying at the prestigious Juilliard School's Jazz Program in New York City. They have performed at top jazz venues such as New York's Blue Note, Birdland, Village Vanguard, Carnegie Hall, London's 100 Club, the Montreal Jazz Festival, and in Scotland, Japan, and Costa Rica. Leading their own quintet, they have performed at such venues as NY's Dizzy's Coca-Cola Club, Smalls Jazz Club, Fat Cat, Cleopatra's Needle, DC's Blues Alley and Twins Jazz Club, as well as internationally.
