HAVANA JOURNAL, 2004 BEGINS PREVIEWS AT THEATRE FOR THE NEW CITY

Havana Journal, 2004 is presented by Theatre for the New City and INTAR, one of the United States’ longest running Latino theatres producing in English, and features Crystal Field, Juan Javier Cardenas, David Skeist, and Liam Torres. Set and lighting design is by Maruti Evans, costume design by Michael Bevins, and sound design by Elizabeth Rhodes.
Playwright Eduardo Machado is the author of over forty plays including The Floating Island Plays, Once Removed, Stevie Wants To Play The Blues, A Burning Beach, Havana Is Waiting, and The Cook, which have been produced at many major regional theatres across the country, Off-Broadway, and in Europe. He is currently a story editor on the HBO show “Hung.”
Director Stefanie Sertich’s choreography was seen most recently in Theatre for a New Audience’s Lotus Feet. Her other Off-Broadway credits include Daryl Roth 2nd Stage, Artf**kers (Asst. Director), The Public Theatre, Do Gooder (NYU MFA workshop), INTAR New Works Lab, The Useless Man, Prospect Theatre The Dome, Museum Pieces and West Moon Street (Asst. Director).
The play centers on Ruth, a disillusioned writer and radical, who leaves the halls of American academia to travel to Cuba. She hopes to find people there who share her beliefs and validate her struggle. It’s not until her return to Columbia University that she is confronted by the realities of sacrifice and idealism.
Performances will be Thursday through Saturday evenings at 8pm, with matinees Sundays at 3pm. There will be an added performance Wednesday March 31st. Tickets will be $15 and can be purchased by visiting www.theaterforthenewcity.net or by calling 212/254-1109.
